West Virginia was admitted in the Union on June 20, 1863 and became the 5th state. The states nickname “The Mountain State” refers to the scenic rugged terrain of the Allegheny Mountains that cross the state. The Allegheny Mountains have the highest mean altitude east of the Mississippi River. Symbols used: Cardinal, Big Laurel, Golden delicious apple, sugar maple.
