The state of Illinois was named after the Illinois River. The Prairie State nickname dates back at least as far as 1842. When most of the state was once covered with prairie grasses. The Land of Lincoln is the Official State Slogan of Illinois, designated in 1955. State symbols: fish Bluegill, flower Native Violet, and tree White Oak.
