Arizona is the 48th state and last of the contiguous states to be admitted to the Union, achieving statehood on February 14, 1912. The name, Arizona, is a combination of two words from the Papago Indian dialect of the Pima language; “Aleh” and “Zon” together as “Aleh-zon” meaning “little spring.”  State symbols: Two-tailed Swallowtail butterfly, flower Saguaro Cactus Blossom, tree is Palo Verde.
