Mississippi means “large river” to the Chippewa Indians. Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle’s map of the area in 1695 use the Indians name. The name Mississippi bring to mind the spirit of the Old South with magnolia trees and beautiful stately mansions. Symbols used: Magnolia, Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly, honeybee and Coreopsis wildflower. Other flower Red Mallow.
